On a previous post about transsexuality and feminism, Cathy Brennan (one of the fauxminists I mentioned in the post) came over to comment. And what bit of wisdom about feminism or stance did she take? What did she have to say about her disgusting and offensive tweet? Well, here is her very educated response:
Aren’t you the guy who was too lazy to dilate?
Seriously. That’s what she said.
Now, I won’t talk too much about Cathy Brennan’s views because Cristan Williams has covered her fucked up views extensively and I will leave it to her to explain it. No need to reinvent the wheel, after all. However, the comment above is very telling as it doesn’t defend her position, it does not take this opportunity to have some serious, open dialogue. She goes right for the genitals, literally. Also, despite the fact that my name is Jessica, she somehow thinks that I am a guy as well. Wow. Getting it so wrong in only ten words. But then again, given the experiences other trans* people had when dealing with Cathy Brennan, I am lucky I got off light with just a creepy question about my genitals.
To Cathy Brennan, I want to make it clear and maybe I should spell this out in the commenting rules (because after all, I just assumed that people don’t bring things like that up because people should know better), you are not allowed to talk about my genitals. Not only was it off-topic (again, against one of the commenting rules), but it’s weird, morbid and creepy. The only reason I approved the comment was to make a point for this post, to show that instead of talking about the real issues, you are interested in the weirdest things. You can’t see the forest for the trees. Now, I will admit that I talked about my sex reassignment surgery but it was more about overcoming the fiscal and legal barriers keeping me from finishing transition than it was about my genitals. That is because, as a society – when it comes to trans* people, cis* people are way too focused on our genitals. If I decide to talk about them with someone, that is my prerogative and choice but I think it’s just as inappropriate as talking about one’s soul. Don’t know what I’m talking about? So, don’t talk about my genitals. If you want to discuss your point of view honestly, I’m more than happy to do so. If you want to talk about how transgender people are somehow predators (despite the fact that we are not), I may cringe at the idea but I’ll do it all the same. If you, however, want to make another comment like your previous comment, I will nuke every single one. For those of us who are feminists, let’s leave the fauxminists like Cathy Brennan behind and work to make a feminism we can all be proud of!
